The business in one offer
Who it serves
Renters and new homeowners furnishing one room, often a living room or home office, who have a budget for furniture but not for full-service design. They pay because they are overwhelmed by choices and want a plan that fits their space and budget before they buy.
What to sell first
A one-room e-design package: a style questionnaire, a review of photos and measurements, one concept board, a scaled 2D floor plan, a shopping list of up to 25 linked items within the client's budget, and one round of revisions within 14 days. Excluded: site visits, construction or electrical plans, 3D renderings, ordering or receiving items and contractor management.
One room, one board and one revision make the work fixed and repeatable. Clients see exactly what they get, and you can deliver to anyone with a phone camera and a tape measure, regardless of location.
What could it cost to start?
This is an original example budget for the limited pilot described above. It is not a researched market average or a complete quote for every location.
| Item to price | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Floor plan and mood board software, three months | $150.00 |
| Portfolio website and booking forms | $280.00 |
| Sample design packages for two volunteer rooms | $200.00 |
| Professional liability insurance quote allowance | $450.00 |
| Business registration allowance | $150.00 |
| Example total | $1,230.00 |
What this assumes—and excludes
Assumes you have design training or a strong portfolio, a laptop and design software skills. Excludes paid ads, office rent, owner pay and local business licenses. Some states regulate the title interior designer, so check local rules on what you may call yourself.
Collect actual supplier, insurance and local-authority information. Add a reserve for delays and unexpected costs; the example total is not a funding recommendation.
How the unit economics work
At an assumed $450.00 per room package and $15.00 in direct costs, contribution is $435.00 before monthly fixed costs, owner pay and taxes. With 7 all-in working hours per unit, that is $62.14 per delivery hour before those deductions. These inputs illustrate the arithmetic; they do not establish a market price or expected earnings.
The example also allows $90.00 in monthly fixed costs. Include unpaid acquisition and administrative time when deciding whether the offer is worthwhile.
Try your own numbers
These are editable planning assumptions, not prices we have verified. Calculations stay in your browser.
Operating result = (price − direct cost) × units − monthly fixed costs. Before owner pay, taxes, financing and startup recovery. At these inputs, delivery requires 70 hours per month, plus any work not included in your per-unit estimate. Sales volume is a scenario, not a forecast.
How to find the first customers
Test a small offer before scaling traffic. Record the source of each enquiry, whether it fits the offer, and whether the buyer pays.
- Design two rooms for friends at no charge in exchange for real before-and-after photos and permission to use them, and present both in your portfolio.
- Post a sample board and floor plan in local homeowner or renter groups where self-promotion is allowed, focusing on solving a specific layout problem.
- Partner with a local realtor or home stager to offer a discounted package to new buyers, and disclose any referral fees.
- If you earn affiliate commissions on linked products, disclose them clearly on every shopping list and on your website.
What to validate before spending more
- Run three paid pilot rooms and measure total hours, including revisions. If revisions push past nine hours, limit changes or raise the price.
- Check your state's rules about the title interior designer and adjust your marketing if needed.
- Test whether clients can take usable measurements by sending a short measuring guide. Track how many need a second set of photos.
- Price two packages, such as $350 and $450, with the same scope and compare booking rates over 20 inquiries.
The operational catch
Products go out of stock between your board and the client's purchase. If your list depends on one hero piece, the design falls apart. Offer an alternate for major items and set a date after which replacements count as new work.
A practical way to fund the first step
Charge the full fee before you start design work. Costs are mostly software and a website, so the first few clients fund the business. Offer a mini consult for $75 to $100 to test demand first.
Separate cash already available from money still to earn. Count only proceeds after direct expenses, and do not spend customer funds needed to fulfill their existing orders.
Questions before you start
Do I need a license to do e-design?
Most states do not license decorating work, but some regulate who can use the title interior designer. Check your state's rules, and avoid structural or electrical advice that needs a licensed professional.
Should I earn affiliate income from the shopping list?
You can, but disclose it clearly. Clients should know if you are paid when they buy linked items, and your recommendations should still fit their budget first.
What if the client hates the design?
That is why the questionnaire and one revision matter. Ask clients for example photos of rooms they like and dislike before you begin, and confirm the direction in a short message before building the full board.
