The business in one offer
Who it serves
Handmade sellers with 20 to 150 listings who have made some sales but feel stuck, such as jewelry makers, candle makers and printable sellers. They pay because they suspect their photos, titles or prices are holding them back but cannot see their own shop objectively.
What to sell first
A ten-listing shop audit: a review of shop stats screenshots, rewritten titles and tag sets for ten listings, photo feedback with shot lists, a fee-aware pricing sheet for those items, and a 45-minute video walkthrough. The seller makes all changes. Excluded: logging into the account, running Etsy ads, product photography, branding and any promised sales or ranking.
Ten listings keep the audit tight, and the seller can apply the same pattern to the rest of the shop. Avoiding account access removes security risk and keeps you clear of policy problems around sharing logins.
What could it cost to start?
This is an original example budget for the limited pilot described above. It is not a researched market average or a complete quote for every location.
| Item to price | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Screen recording and video call tools, three months | $90.00 |
| Spreadsheet pricing template build | $60.00 |
| Website and booking page | $200.00 |
| Two pilot audits at a reduced rate | $150.00 |
| Professional liability insurance quote allowance | $400.00 |
| Business registration allowance | $120.00 |
| Example total | $1,020.00 |
What this assumes—and excludes
Assumes you have run your own Etsy shop with real sales history, a laptop and a good eye for product photos. Excludes paid ads, office space, owner pay and local license fees. Check insurance and local rules before charging clients.
Collect actual supplier, insurance and local-authority information. Add a reserve for delays and unexpected costs; the example total is not a funding recommendation.
How the unit economics work
At an assumed $280.00 per shop audit and $10.00 in direct costs, contribution is $270.00 before monthly fixed costs, owner pay and taxes. With 4.5 all-in working hours per unit, that is $60.00 per delivery hour before those deductions. These inputs illustrate the arithmetic; they do not establish a market price or expected earnings.
The example also allows $80.00 in monthly fixed costs. Include unpaid acquisition and administrative time when deciding whether the offer is worthwhile.
Try your own numbers
These are editable planning assumptions, not prices we have verified. Calculations stay in your browser.
Operating result = (price − direct cost) × units − monthly fixed costs. Before owner pay, taxes, financing and startup recovery. At these inputs, delivery requires 45 hours per month, plus any work not included in your per-unit estimate. Sales volume is a scenario, not a forecast.
How to find the first customers
Test a small offer before scaling traffic. Record the source of each enquiry, whether it fits the offer, and whether the buyer pays.
- Offer three sellers in maker groups you already belong to a free mini-audit of one listing, and ask permission to share the before-and-after in your portfolio.
- Run a free online session at a local makers' market or craft guild on fee-aware pricing, with a downloadable worksheet for people who opt in.
- Write a plain guide to calculating Etsy fees per sale and share it with craft groups. Track which readers ask about the full audit.
- Ask craft supply shops whether they would display your flyer or mention the audit to customers who sell online.
What to validate before spending more
- Read Etsy's fee pages and seller policy and confirm your pricing sheet includes every fee a seller pays, from listing to transaction and payment processing.
- Run two pilot audits and time each one. If the work takes more than six hours, reduce the number of listings or simplify the photo feedback.
- Check back with pilot sellers after 30 days and record which edits they actually made. Do not claim sales lifts you cannot verify.
- Confirm whether your city requires a business license for online consulting from home.
The operational catch
Sellers often underprice because they forget fees, packaging and their own time. When your pricing sheet shows a higher price, some refuse to change, and the audit feels useless to them. Show the math clearly and offer a middle option, such as dropping the least profitable variants.
A practical way to fund the first step
Charge the full audit fee upfront. You need only software you probably already have, so your startup spend is small and can come from your own shop's earnings.
Separate cash already available from money still to earn. Count only proceeds after direct expenses, and do not spend customer funds needed to fulfill their existing orders.
Questions before you start
Should I log into a client's Etsy account?
Avoid it. Sharing logins creates security risks and may conflict with platform rules. Ask for screenshots or a screen-share session, and let the seller make every change themselves.
Can I promise more traffic?
No. Etsy search depends on many factors you cannot control. Describe your audit as clear recommendations and math, and avoid predicting views, sales or rankings.
What if my client sells products with safety rules?
Some products, such as candles, cosmetics or children's items, carry labeling and safety requirements. Flag them and point the seller to the right agency guidance instead of advising on compliance yourself.
