The business in one offer
Who it serves
Freelancers who need a repeatable way to quote a defined service.
What to sell first
A quote-planning worksheet and guided review of scope, costs, capacity and alternatives. The final price and terms remain the user’s decision.
A transparent calculation is more useful than a mysterious recommended price. Show how additional revisions or slower delivery affect contribution per hour.
What could it cost to start?
This is an original example budget for the limited pilot described above. It is not a researched market average or a complete quote for every location.
| Item to price | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Prototype calculator | $100.00 |
| Testing examples | $100.00 |
| Website and documentation | $80.00 |
| Reserve | $170.00 |
| Example total | $450.00 |
What this assumes—and excludes
Existing basic skills, computer or transport where needed, and a suitable place to work. Excludes owner pay, living costs, major premises or vehicle purchases, and any local requirements not covered by the allowances. Replace every allowance with a quote before committing.
Collect actual supplier, insurance and local-authority information. Add a reserve for delays and unexpected costs; the example total is not a funding recommendation.
How the unit economics work
At an assumed $35.00 per session and $5.00 in direct costs, contribution is $30.00 before monthly fixed costs, owner pay and taxes. With 0.4 all-in working hours per unit, that is $75.00 per delivery hour before those deductions. These inputs illustrate the arithmetic; they do not establish a market price or expected earnings.
The example also allows $80.00 in monthly fixed costs. Include unpaid acquisition and administrative time when deciding whether the offer is worthwhile.
Try your own numbers
These are editable planning assumptions, not prices we have verified. Calculations stay in your browser.
Operating result = (price − direct cost) × units − monthly fixed costs. Before owner pay, taxes, financing and startup recovery. At these inputs, delivery requires 4 hours per month, plus any work not included in your per-unit estimate. Sales volume is a scenario, not a forecast.
How to find the first customers
Test a small offer before scaling traffic. Record the source of each enquiry, whether it fits the offer, and whether the buyer pays.
- Collect anonymized examples of difficult quotes.
- Demonstrate a scenario where a higher price still fails because scope expands.
- Test a paid review with freelancers who can compare it to their actual delivery time.
What to validate before spending more
- Separate market evidence from user-entered assumptions.
- Check arithmetic independently of AI prose.
- Do not imply a quote is legal or tax advice.
The operational catch
Generic industry averages can hide enormous scope differences. Avoid presenting a single “correct” price or collaborating to fix competitors’ prices.
A practical way to fund the first step
Begin with a spreadsheet-led consultation and automate recurring questions only after validation.
Separate cash already available from money still to earn. Count only proceeds after direct expenses, and do not spend customer funds needed to fulfill their existing orders.
Questions before you start
Does a higher hourly figure mean a better business?
Not necessarily. Utilization, unpaid sales time, cancellations and demand affect earnings. Use the figure to compare scenarios, not forecast income.
