The business in one offer
Who it serves
Activity directors at assisted living, independent senior living and adult day centers who need fresh daily activities for residents. They buy materials in quantity, want large print and themes residents recognize, and appreciate a supplier who sends new volumes on a schedule.
What to sell first
A case of 20 identical 60-page large-print books with themed word searches, simple logic puzzles and memory lane trivia, answers in the back, and spiral binding that lies flat. Excluded: medical or cognitive therapy claims, custom editions per facility at this stage and digital subscriptions.
Selling by the case to organizations means fewer, larger orders and predictable reorders when a facility likes the book. Large print and themed content fit a clear need, and you avoid competing on retailer search pages.
What could it cost to start?
This is an original example budget for the limited pilot described above. It is not a researched market average or a complete quote for every location.
| Item to price | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Puzzle construction software, one year | $120.00 |
| Short-run printing of the first two cases | $320.00 |
| Sample copies mailed to activity directors | $150.00 |
| Layout software, one year | $100.00 |
| Proofreading of all puzzles and answers | $180.00 |
| Example total | $870.00 |
What this assumes—and excludes
Assumes you can build or check puzzles accurately and lay out pages. Excludes owner pay, a trade show booth, warehouse space and sales tax registration in states where you ship. Printing prices depend on binding, page count and quantity, so request current quotes.
Collect actual supplier, insurance and local-authority information. Add a reserve for delays and unexpected costs; the example total is not a funding recommendation.
How the unit economics work
At an assumed $180.00 per 20-copy case and $88.00 in direct costs, contribution is $92.00 before monthly fixed costs, owner pay and taxes. With 1.5 all-in working hours per unit, that is $61.33 per delivery hour before those deductions. These inputs illustrate the arithmetic; they do not establish a market price or expected earnings.
The example also allows $30.00 in monthly fixed costs. Include unpaid acquisition and administrative time when deciding whether the offer is worthwhile.
Try your own numbers
These are editable planning assumptions, not prices we have verified. Calculations stay in your browser.
Operating result = (price − direct cost) × units − monthly fixed costs. Before owner pay, taxes, financing and startup recovery. At these inputs, delivery requires 15 hours per month, plus any work not included in your per-unit estimate. Sales volume is a scenario, not a forecast.
How to find the first customers
Test a small offer before scaling traffic. Record the source of each enquiry, whether it fits the offer, and whether the buyer pays.
- Call or email activity directors at ten local senior communities, ask if you may drop off a free sample book, and return two weeks later to ask how residents used it.
- Ask the state association for activity professionals whether vendors can exhibit or advertise in their newsletter, and attend one regional meeting if allowed.
- Offer a subscription option for one new volume each quarter, delivered as a case, so facilities can plan their activity budgets ahead.
- Keep a simple record of which themes residents enjoyed, based on what directors tell you, and design the next volume around them.
What to validate before spending more
- Have three older adults solve a sample puzzle set and note any eye strain, confusing instructions or unsolvable grids before printing.
- Check every word search and logic puzzle against its answer key, and have a second person verify a random sample.
- Get printing quotes for spiral and perfect binding at 20, 50 and 100 copies to see how unit costs drop.
- Ask facilities about their purchasing process, such as whether they need invoices, tax-exempt forms or vendor registration, before your first order.
The operational catch
It is tempting to describe puzzles as brain training or memory therapy, especially for senior buyers. Those claims imply health benefits you cannot support and can draw regulatory trouble. Market the books on enjoyment, readability and conversation, and leave health claims out of every listing and sales sheet.
A practical way to fund the first step
Print two cases for samples and the first orders, and ask facilities for payment on delivery or an invoice due in 15 days. Build reorders into quarterly subscriptions before printing larger runs.
Separate cash already available from money still to earn. Count only proceeds after direct expenses, and do not spend customer funds needed to fulfill their existing orders.
Questions before you start
Can I generate puzzles with software?
Yes, many constructors use software for grids, but check each one, write your own themes and clues, and avoid copying puzzles from other books. Original selection and arrangement are what make the book yours.
What font size counts as large print?
There is no single rule for commercial books, but many large-print publishers use 16 point or larger with high contrast. Test with real readers rather than guessing.
Should I also sell on retail platforms?
A retail listing can help individual family members buy copies. Treat it as secondary to bulk sales and price so that per-copy margins still make sense after the retailer's share.
