The business in one offer
Who it serves
Adults who own a single precious photo, such as a wedding portrait, a military photo or a picture of a parent as a child, that has torn, faded or water-stained. They want it fixed for a memorial, a family gift or a reunion and care more about faithfulness than glamour.
What to sell first
A single photo restoration: a scan of the original or a customer upload, repair of tears, creases, spots and fading, tonal correction, one revision round, a print-ready digital file and one 8x10 print mailed in a protective sleeve. Excluded: colorization, rebuilding missing faces, adding or removing people, and framing.
Setting a fixed scope for common damage lets you quote one price for most photos and send unusual ones to a custom quote. Families understand the result before paying, and you avoid long reconstruction work at a flat price.
What could it cost to start?
This is an original example budget for the limited pilot described above. It is not a researched market average or a complete quote for every location.
| Item to price | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Flatbed scanner for prints | $300.00 |
| Retouching software, three months | $75.00 |
| Monitor calibration device | $180.00 |
| Print lab samples | $80.00 |
| Archival sleeves and rigid mailers | $60.00 |
| Simple website with upload and payment | $150.00 |
| Example total | $845.00 |
What this assumes—and excludes
Assumes you have a computer with a decent monitor and strong retouching skills. Excludes framing inventory, a storefront, owner pay and any local license fees. Print and shipping costs change, so get current quotes from labs and carriers before setting the price.
Collect actual supplier, insurance and local-authority information. Add a reserve for delays and unexpected costs; the example total is not a funding recommendation.
How the unit economics work
At an assumed $95.00 per restored photo and $12.00 in direct costs, contribution is $83.00 before monthly fixed costs, owner pay and taxes. With 1.6 all-in working hours per unit, that is $51.88 per delivery hour before those deductions. These inputs illustrate the arithmetic; they do not establish a market price or expected earnings.
The example also allows $70.00 in monthly fixed costs. Include unpaid acquisition and administrative time when deciding whether the offer is worthwhile.
Try your own numbers
These are editable planning assumptions, not prices we have verified. Calculations stay in your browser.
Operating result = (price − direct cost) × units − monthly fixed costs. Before owner pay, taxes, financing and startup recovery. At these inputs, delivery requires 16 hours per month, plus any work not included in your per-unit estimate. Sales volume is a scenario, not a forecast.
How to find the first customers
Test a small offer before scaling traffic. Record the source of each enquiry, whether it fits the offer, and whether the buyer pays.
- Restore three damaged photos from your own family, with permission, and display before-and-after pairs side by side on your website and in printed form.
- Ask funeral homes, genealogy societies and frame shops whether they get requests for photo repair, and offer a referral arrangement that is disclosed to customers.
- Give a short talk at a library or historical society on caring for old photos, with the host's permission, and invite attendees to opt in for a follow-up email about restoration.
- Ask each customer after delivery whether they want copies for relatives, and record which requests come from referrals so you know where work originates.
What to validate before spending more
- Restore ten sample images with different damage and time each one. Use the times to define what fits in the standard price and what moves to a custom quote.
- Test two print labs with the same image and compare color, paper and shipping speed. Choose the lab that produces the most faithful skin tones.
- Read the terms of any AI tools you use to understand who owns outputs and whether uploaded images are used for training, and tell customers your approach.
- Mail a sample print to yourself in your chosen packaging and check for bending or damage, then adjust packaging before sending to customers.
The operational catch
AI repair tools can fill missing areas with invented detail, including new eyes, teeth or ears that look plausible but belong to no one in the family. Customers notice immediately. Use AI features sparingly, compare results against the original at every step, and tell customers when part of an image was rebuilt rather than recovered.
A practical way to fund the first step
Ask customers to pay upfront through your website, and start by working from uploaded scans to avoid insurance for originals. Add mail-in scanning once you have enough orders to justify packaging and handling costs.
Separate cash already available from money still to earn. Count only proceeds after direct expenses, and do not spend customer funds needed to fulfill their existing orders.
Questions before you start
Should customers mail me the original photo?
Uploads avoid the risk of loss but depend on customer scan quality. If originals are mailed, ask customers to use tracked shipping and return them the same way, and note their condition on arrival.
How long does a restoration take?
Simple repairs may take an hour, while heavy damage can take much longer. Quote a standard turnaround, such as a week, and give a separate estimate for difficult cases before starting.
Can I colorize photos too?
Colorization is a separate art and can upset families if colors look wrong. Offer it as an add-on after the restoration is approved, and ask about known details like eye or uniform colors.
