The business in one offer
Who it serves
Families in suburban homes whose garages filled up with bikes, holiday decorations and sports gear to the point that cars no longer fit. Owners who just finished a cleanout or bought a house with an empty garage are the easiest first buyers. They pay because the job needs a ladder, a second person and confidence about joists.
What to sell first
A one-bay storage package: two 4-by-8 overhead racks anchored to ceiling joists, eight feet of slatwall with ten hooks and two baskets, layout planning and haul-away of packaging. Excluded: cabinets, flooring, electrical changes, moving the garage door opener, custom carpentry, and sorting or decluttering the owner's items.
A small catalog means you can stock parts, know install times and sell a package from a photo board. Clear published load ratings let you explain safety simply, and the per-bay package converts well into two-bay and three-bay quotes.
What could it cost to start?
This is an original example budget for the limited pilot described above. It is not a researched market average or a complete quote for every location.
| Item to price | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Two demo overhead racks and slatwall panels | $650.00 |
| Stud finder, laser level and drill kit | $300.00 |
| Lag screws, anchors and hook assortment | $150.00 |
| Two step ladders and a panel lift rental | $220.00 |
| General liability insurance deposit | $450.00 |
| Layout sketch app and booking page | $90.00 |
| Example total | $1,860.00 |
What this assumes—and excludes
Assumes you own a truck or van that fits 8-foot panels and have basic carpentry skills. Excludes business licenses that vary by city, a helper's wages, owner pay, warehouse space and advertising. Get local supplier pricing and insurance quotes before committing.
Collect actual supplier, insurance and local-authority information. Add a reserve for delays and unexpected costs; the example total is not a funding recommendation.
How the unit economics work
At an assumed $1,150.00 per garage bay and $520.00 in direct costs, contribution is $630.00 before monthly fixed costs, owner pay and taxes. With 7 all-in working hours per unit, that is $90.00 per delivery hour before those deductions. These inputs illustrate the arithmetic; they do not establish a market price or expected earnings.
The example also allows $140.00 in monthly fixed costs. Include unpaid acquisition and administrative time when deciding whether the offer is worthwhile.
Try your own numbers
These are editable planning assumptions, not prices we have verified. Calculations stay in your browser.
Operating result = (price − direct cost) × units − monthly fixed costs. Before owner pay, taxes, financing and startup recovery. At these inputs, delivery requires 70 hours per month, plus any work not included in your per-unit estimate. Sales volume is a scenario, not a forecast.
How to find the first customers
Test a small offer before scaling traffic. Record the source of each enquiry, whether it fits the offer, and whether the buyer pays.
- Ask professional organizers who declutter garages but do not install storage whether they will refer clients at the end of their jobs. Offer them a quick visit to see your demo rack.
- Install a package in your own garage and photograph it from the same angle before and after. Use those images, not supplier photos, on your website and flyers.
- Contact epoxy floor installers in your area and coordinate so racks go up after the floor cures. A shared customer gets two finished upgrades with one scheduling call.
- Post in neighborhood groups that allow businesses during spring cleaning season, with the package price and what is included. Track which posts turn into measured quotes.
What to validate before spending more
- Read the load ratings and installation instructions for each product, and confirm the joist size and spacing they require. Turn down garages where the ceiling framing does not match.
- Install your first two packages for friends and time each step, including unpacking and cleanup. If one bay takes more than eight hours, adjust the package or price.
- Ask your city whether installing storage systems counts as handyman or contractor work, and note any job size limit that triggers a license.
- Get supplier quotes from at least two distributors and compare lead times, since running out of one rack size can stall a whole week.
The operational catch
Garage door tracks and openers often sit right where an overhead rack would fit, and a rack too low can catch the door or a car roof. Measure door travel with the door open, check vehicle heights including roof boxes, and mark a minimum clearance on your layout before ordering parts.
A practical way to fund the first step
Collect a deposit that covers materials before ordering, and keep only one demo set rather than a stock of inventory. Buy additional racks per job until your sales show which sizes move.
Separate cash already available from money still to earn. Count only proceeds after direct expenses, and do not spend customer funds needed to fulfill their existing orders.
Questions before you start
Should I build wood shelving instead?
Wood shelving is cheap in materials but slower to build and harder to load-rate. Manufactured racks with published ratings let you quote faster and explain safety limits clearly to customers.
How much weight can overhead racks hold?
Only what the manufacturer rates for that model, assuming correct joist anchoring. Write the rated limit on a label near the rack and tell owners to keep heavy items on floor shelving instead.
Can I offer cabinets later?
Yes, once your bay package runs smoothly. Cabinets add leveling and fastening steps and longer lead times, so price them separately and order only after a deposit.
