The business in one offer
Who it serves
Homeowners with many windows and dusty blinds, offices with large window areas, and property managers turning rental units. They pay because blinds are tedious to clean, and replacement costs more than cleaning. Allergy-conscious households often want blinds cleaned seasonally. Property managers matter most early, because one relationship can mean a stack of identical vinyl blinds every month.
What to sell first
Blind cleaning and minor repair priced per blind, using on-site hand cleaning or pickup washing for heavily soiled blinds, with checks for cord safety and replacement of wands or cord stops where possible. Excluded: shutters, fabric shades, custom window treatments, full restringing and installing new blinds.
Per-blind pricing is easy to quote from window counts. A small repair menu adds value without specialized tools, and cord safety checks give customers a reason to trust your inspection.
What could it cost to start?
This is an original example budget for the limited pilot described above. It is not a researched market average or a complete quote for every location.
| Item to price | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Vacuum with brush attachments and microfiber tools | $250.00 |
| Washing tub, drying racks and gentle cleaners | $200.00 |
| Repair parts kit and ladders | $250.00 |
| General liability insurance | $600.00 |
| Website and booking system | $150.00 |
| Pilot jobs with discounted pricing | $150.00 |
| Example total | $1,600.00 |
What this assumes—and excludes
These costs assume you own a vehicle and basic hand tools. They exclude ultrasonic machines, shop space and owner pay. Insurance and local permit needs vary, so get quotes before taking jobs.
Collect actual supplier, insurance and local-authority information. Add a reserve for delays and unexpected costs; the example total is not a funding recommendation.
How the unit economics work
At an assumed $220.00 per home job and $15.00 in direct costs, contribution is $205.00 before monthly fixed costs, owner pay and taxes. With 3.5 all-in working hours per unit, that is $58.57 per delivery hour before those deductions. These inputs illustrate the arithmetic; they do not establish a market price or expected earnings.
The example also allows $90.00 in monthly fixed costs. Include unpaid acquisition and administrative time when deciding whether the offer is worthwhile.
Try your own numbers
These are editable planning assumptions, not prices we have verified. Calculations stay in your browser.
Operating result = (price − direct cost) × units − monthly fixed costs. Before owner pay, taxes, financing and startup recovery. At these inputs, delivery requires 35 hours per month, plus any work not included in your per-unit estimate. Sales volume is a scenario, not a forecast.
How to find the first customers
Test a small offer before scaling traffic. Record the source of each enquiry, whether it fits the offer, and whether the buyer pays.
- Contact property managers and offer blind cleaning for rental turnovers, priced per unit.
- Partner with house cleaners who do not clean blinds, and agree on referral terms in writing.
- Post before-and-after photos of real jobs, taken with the customer's permission, and note which photo each new inquiry mentions so you know what persuades people.
- Offer office managers a twice-yearly blind cleaning plan with fixed dates, and record how many renew at the second visit rather than counting first bookings alone.
What to validate before spending more
- Clean blinds in your home and a friend's home, timing each method. Use the results to set prices.
- Test cleaners on different blind materials, such as vinyl, aluminum and wood, to confirm they do not damage finishes.
- Ask your insurer in writing whether the policy covers blinds and windows damaged while in your care or while you remove and rehang them.
- Ask your city clerk whether a mobile cleaning service needs a general business license, and keep a dated note of the reply with your records.
The operational catch
Old vinyl or wood blinds can crack, warp or fade during cleaning, and customers may blame you. Inspect blinds before cleaning, point out existing damage, and decline blinds that look too fragile. Photos help prevent disputes. Rehanging is a second risk: brackets in old drywall can pull loose, so check them before taking blinds down.
A practical way to fund the first step
Start with hand cleaning and buy an ultrasonic machine only if demand supports it. Use deposits on larger jobs to buy repair parts. A property manager who books several units at once can be asked for half up front.
Separate cash already available from money still to earn. Count only proceeds after direct expenses, and do not spend customer funds needed to fulfill their existing orders.
Questions before you start
Can all blinds be cleaned?
Most vinyl, aluminum and faux wood blinds can be cleaned. Fabric or real wood blinds need gentler methods or may need replacement. Ask for a photo of the label or headrail before quoting unusual blinds.
Do you install new blinds?
Not at first. Installation involves measuring, ordering and mounting hardware, which is a different business with different liability. Focus on cleaning and minor repairs, then add installation only if customers keep asking.
Why check cord safety?
Corded blinds can pose risks to children and pets. Pointing out loose cords and offering cord stops or cleats adds value. Mention what you see without making safety promises, and suggest cordless replacements for homes with small children.
